Periodontal disease (gum disease) is a chronic oral disease in which your gum tissues become infected, destroying the bone structure that provides support to your teeth. It is a chronic condition that progresses slowly (like diabetes). Periodontal disease, if left untreated, could lead to so much bone loss that your teeth might become loose and start falling off.
ARESTIN® (minocycline hydrochloride) is a type of antibiotic that kills the microbes responsible for the infection.
- The first step in periodontal disease treatment is proper diagnosis. Here at DNA Dental Studio, we perform a full-mouth periodontal charting whenever a new patient walks in. This helps us to detect and diagnose any serious condition of your gum tissues.
- The next step is periodontal disease treatment. Gum disease is typically treated with a "deep cleaning," commonly called scaling and root planing. This is a procedure that uses a local anesthetic to keep you numb and reduce your discomfort. Following that, we clean and discard any tartar or calculus. Roughly six weeks later, our dentists will perform a re-evaluation to ensure that the treated areas are still in good condition. If your gums do not respond as well as expected, we may apply an antibiotic gel called Arestin around the affected teeth to help with disinfection and to kill any harmful germs.
- The third stage of the procedure is maintenance. Plaque can turn into calculus in 24 hours only. Hence, it is important to visit our dentists every 3-4 months depending on the severity of your infection, if you are suffering from periodontal disease. Proper home care is the most important factor in managing your periodontal disease. We place a lot of importance on teaching you the correct techniques of cleaning your teeth. This guidance is provided by us after a proper assessment of the intensity of your infection and your personal choices. We try to make sure that we can make the entire process as easy for you as possible.
