A denture, or a complete denture, is an oral device installed in the mouth, replaces original teeth and renders support for the cheeks and lips.
MAXIMUM DENTURES ARE BUILT OF ACRYLIC AND CAN BE DESIGNED IN TWO DIFFERENT WAYS.
- A conventional denture is created after every tooth has been removed and the tissues (gums) have completely healed.
- An immediate denture is designed and installed instantly after the teeth are removed and the tissues are left to heal beneath the denture.
- An upper denture is made of acrylic, generally, flesh colored that hides the palate (roof of the mouth).
- A lower denture is shaped just like a horseshoe to keep space for the tongue.
The teeth are composed of porcelain, plastic, or a combination. Dentures can be custom-built to fit over endodontic-treated teeth, and a complete denture can be fixed to dental implants to enable a safer and more secure fit of the oral device.
Dentures over an average course of time will wear off and require replacing or relining so that the jaw alignment is kept regular. The alignment will gradually change as the bone and gum ridges shrink or recede because of teeth removal. Regular oral exams are still crucial for the patient to examine the oral tissues for any disease or change.
