What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign straightens your teeth using a series of clear, removable aligners made from smooth, comfortable plastic, without the need for metal wires or brackets. Using advanced 3D computer imaging, your dentist designs a customized treatment plan that maps out the precise movements of your teeth and the design of your aligners. Each set of aligners is worn for about 1–2 weeks, gently guiding your teeth into place, and should only be removed for brushing and flossing. Over time, this process delivers a straighter, healthier smile with minimal disruption to your daily life.

Why Would I Need Invisalign?

You should consider Invisalign if you want to correct misaligned teeth or bite issues without the look and feel of traditional braces. Invisalign can treat a wide range of concerns, including crowding, gaps, overbites, underbites, and crossbites.

If orthodontic issues are left untreated, several problems can develop over time that go beyond just the appearance of your smile. Crooked, crowded, or misaligned teeth can be more difficult to clean, which increases the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath. Bite problems, like overbites, underbites, or crossbites, can lead to jaw pain, uneven tooth wear, difficulty chewing, and even headaches or TMJ disorders. In the long run, untreated misalignment can lead to both functional and aesthetic challenges that may necessitate more complex treatment later.

What are the risks of not getting Invisalign?

Invisalign vs. Metal Braces

  • Appearance: Invisalign utilizes nearly invisible clear aligners, whereas metal braces employ brackets and wires that are more noticeable.
  • Comfort: Invisalign trays are smooth and removable, often causing less irritation than traditional brackets and wires.
  • Convenience: With Invisalign, you can remove the aligners to brush and floss, whereas braces require more careful cleaning around the wires and adhere to specific food restrictions.
  • Treatment Range: Metal braces may be better suited for very complex or severe alignment issues, while Invisalign is highly effective for mild to moderate cases.
  • Follow-ups: Invisalign typically requires fewer in-office visits compared to braces, which require more frequent adjustments.

Invisalign Consultations

Your consultation (in-person or virtual) includes everything you need to understand your smile and treatment options, including X-rays, intraoral and extraoral photos, and an iTero 3D scan.

At our office, we want to make it simple and affordable for you to start your smile journey. That’s why we offer complimentary 3D scans for every patient. Once you’ve had your scan, you’ll have two weeks to take advantage of an exclusive $600 savings coupon toward treatment.

This special promotion includes everything you’ll need along the way, your aligner trays, all of your visits with us, and even a set of retainers once treatment is complete. It’s our way of ensuring you feel confident not only in your smile, but also in the process itself.

Whether you’re just curious about what’s possible or ready to begin right away, your free scan is the perfect first step.

02.

Three Months After Treatment

For the three months following treatment, wear your retainers at all times, both day and night. Only remove them to eat and brush your teeth. After three months, you can start wearing them only at night. You will need to continue to wear them every night to prevent shifting. If your teeth move, your retainers will no longer be effective.

Retainers can last up to two years. However, it is possible to stretch them out sooner, often due to unknowingly grinding or clenching your teeth or not wearing your retainer as instructed. It’s also common to stretch out the first retainer due to constant use during the three months following orthodontic treatment.

Every six months, try on a duplicate retainer. If it feels significantly tighter, your current set has stretched, and it’s time to switch to a new set before your teeth shift.

Invisalign Success: All You Need to Know

  • Wear your trays all the time, 24 hours a day, all day, all night, while eating, and sleeping. Only remove them to clean your teeth or trays.
  • Minimize your sugar/acidic intake.
  • If you lose your current tray, put on your previous tray and call our office for further instructions.
  • Bring all trays to each appointment. Never throw away any trays. Let us throw them away so there are no mix-ups.
  • Any lost attachments will be replaced (if necessary) at your next appointment, unless we have otherwise specified.
  • Gum irritation can be treated with the ortho wax supplied in the tray case. You buy more from the pharmacy if needed.
  • While uncommon, soreness can be treated with Motrin/Advil/ibuprofen. If you’re on any medication or have a medical condition, ask your physician first.
  • Avoid foods with yellow dyes such as turmeric, mustard, and mac and cheese, as they can cause stains.

Retainers After Invisalign

Protect the smile you worked so hard to get. Upgrade from a single set retainer to Vivera retainers from Invisalign–a more secure way of protecting your teeth. Our office is happy to scan your teeth and get you started with Vivera.

  • Vivera includes four sets of retainers.
  • Feel free to bring your retainers in for cleaning when you come to our office for a professional cleaning.
  • Let us know when you start using your last set of Vivera. You don’t want to be without a backup on hand.
  • Your scan will be saved on file for future retainers.
  • If you haven’t had major dental work and have been following instructions, you likely won’t need a new scan/impression every time you need a replacement.

FAQs

  • How long does Invisalign take to start working?

Most patients begin to notice small changes in their smile within just a few weeks. The exact timeline depends on the complexity of your case, but Invisalign starts gently shifting your teeth from the very first tray.

  • How many Invisalign trays do you need?

The number of trays depends on your individual treatment plan. Some patients need as few as 10–20 trays for minor adjustments, while others may need 30 or more for more complex cases. Each tray is designed to make gradual, precise changes until your treatment is complete.

  • Will Invisalign work with my lifestyle?

Absolutely! Clear aligners are designed to fit seamlessly into your daily routine:

Eat and Drink Freely: Simply remove your aligners whenever it’s time for a snack or meal.
Easy Oral Care: Take them out to brush and floss as usual, keeping your teeth and gums healthy.
No Lifestyle Changes Needed: Continue your everyday activities while your smile transforms.
Stay Confident: Because the aligners are clear, you can smile naturally throughout treatment.
Picture-Perfect Smiles: Invisalign makes it easy to look your best for special occasions.
Convenient Appointments: Most check-ins are quick, scheduled about every six weeks.

More than 20 million people around the globe have transformed their smiles with Invisalign.*

Invisalign is the #1 doctor recommended clear aligner.•
