Dental Inlays and Onlays in Glendale, CA

Inlays and onlays are effective solutions when there is little to no tooth structure left to hold a filling or if the tooth has not been damaged enough to warrant a crown. They can be built of porcelain, composite resin, or gold and are placed on the damaged portion of the tooth.

An inlay, which appears much like a filling, is used inside the cusp tips of your tooth. Whereas an onlay is a stronger reconstruction, it appears much like an inlay but outwardly extends over one or more of the cusps of the tooth.

What is the process?

Onlays and inlays typically require only two appointments to complete the process. The initial visit will involve removing the decayed area of the tooth and creating a copy of that portion for the laboratory to design the final onlay or inlay. This will be followed by inserting a temporary restoration to seal the tooth.

What are the next steps?

At the second visit, the temporary sealant will be taken out. Dr. Dino or Dr. Angie will then ensure an appropriate fit and feel. If the fit is entirely satisfactory, the onlay or inlay will be secured to the tooth with the aid of a strong resin and polished to achieve a smooth finish.

FAQ

  • How long does a dental inlay or onlay last?

With proper care, inlays and onlays can last 10–30 years, depending on the material and your oral hygiene practices.

  • How many dental inlays or onlays can you have?

You can have multiple inlays or onlays placed, depending on the number of teeth that need restoration.

  • Can a dental inlay or dental onlay fail?

While rare, failure can happen due to decay around the tooth, trauma, or poor oral care. Regular checkups help prevent this.
